Championships 2025 Grandmaster Foreword

Hi Everyone,

I wish to congratulate all of you for contributing to our 27th National Championships.  Your effort and dedication to attend our whole day event has been reflected in the success and enjoyment at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre, Hornchurch Saturday 15th November. Parents’ support has been most crucial in attending with their children.  Many of you have travelled from afar starting your journey before 6 am in the morning. I am glad that most of you have stayed and cheered everyone on!!

Instructors who served as Judges and Referees worked tirelessly to ensure Fairness and Safety throughout the day.  They have also spent time to attend Championship Rules Training at HQ, as well as in their own clubs under the supervision of Senior Instructors.  Ji Grades also played important roles as Time-Keepers and Score Keepers.  This is a good step moving on to be Judges in the future.

I also want to give a special thank you to a small team of HQ Duan Belts under the able supervision of Master Christopher Whalley and Master Kristian Knight.  All necessary equipment including our flag, signs, floor mats, tables, chairs etc… had to be picked up and transported to the venue from our Grays HQ the Friday evening before the Championship.  They had to be set up and in place ready to start the next morning at 8am, and then to be loaded up again and transported to Grays.  Also a big thank you to Ms Amanda Carrett and Ms Larisa Cosma for making the sandwiches.

Our Championship event is an inner challenge to all of us in many, many aspects-which is directly related to the result of our regular training, self-discipline and improvement of our own confidence, technical skills and above all self-control.

Senior Instructors must lead in inculcating these core values which is clearly stated in our Seven Principles of our Ren Yi Wu Kwan.  “The Dao/WAY only flows one way like water”, towards our next generation. Our aim is to better ourselves as a martial art school, not just individually.

To compete and judge our competition as sport is not completely possible, unless we allow serious injuries to occur.  Unintentional injuries do occur, as in other non-combative sports/activity, but they are rare in our school. It is our way forward to compete with good martial art spirit.  The highest skill is one’s ability to execute well technically, with excellent response speed and still maintain self-control.  The Duan belts can display this level of mind and body discipline.  It is then an excellent Display of Power, Speed, Precision and a Delight to watch!! Your Juniors or students can then be able to follow this Way.

All of us has to experience and learn from each other in our long journey in our Ren Yi Wu Kwan and Life in general.  I am very fortunate to see some of you who are still actively contributing since my first arrival in Thurrock in 1973!! It was so wonderful that we were all able to meet and catch up during our Championships and later at my residence in Orsett, packed to capacity as in past decades.

Michael Gevaux 2nd Duan, a past instructor and wife Maria, provided a very efficient First Aid Care.  They are both Paramedics Instructors/Assessors, presently residing in France.  Michael first started training some forty years ago in Hornchurch and held class in Brentwood. Thank you Michael and Maria.

I welcome your suggestions and feedback towards the improvement of our next event.

Tang Sou!!
